What to consider
When deciding on your kitchen feature lighting you need to consider these FOUR elements:
- Where to feature the lighting.
- How much lighting to feature.
- Whether to go for function, or style.
- Cost to purchase and run the feature lighting.
1 where
First you need to decide where you want to put your kitchen feature lighting. You have several options including:
- In the centre of your kitchen ceiling.
- Over or on the island bench top.
- Over or on a breakfast bar.
- In glass front cupboards.
- On island bench kick-boards.
- On a kitchen wall.
- In a kitchen wall insert shelf.
2 quantity
Next you need to determine the quantity of feature lights. This will be dependent on how much light each one emits. You might choose to have one bright feature light or several soft warm lights. Here are some ideas for the amount of feature lighting you could select:
- Three soft glow pendant lights over the island bench.
- Two soft glow dome lights at each end of a bench.
- Multiple glass cupboard lights emitting a glow across the kitchen.
- A strip of lighting underneath the cupboards.
- One main light in the centre of the kitchen ceiling.
3 purpose
Does your feature light need to perform a particular function within your kitchen design such as; lighting up a work space or cupboard, bringing attention to a piece of art or a design feature in your kitchen or is the purpose of your feature light to simply - look amazing!
4 economics
When you choose your feature light or lights you need to consider how many bulbs, the type of bulbs and the energy consumption of each bulb. Selecting a feature light that has multiple bulbs may look fantastic but it could also cost you a small fortune and continue to do so in the future. You can minimise the cost of a multiple bulb feature light by going with LED bulbs which may increase the initial outlay but they last a long time and consume minimal power.
